Implementation in the Field

Bio-Fly offers its customers professional consulting and support services for comprehensive implementation of SIT projects in the field, that includes:

  • Dispersal of flies in the field
  • Monitoring of flies and fruit
  • Complementary control actions
  • Control and processing of dispersal data, trapping and infected fruit

Fly Dispersal

Fly dispersal is conducted twice a week throughout the year.

There are two dispersal methods:

  • Aerial release of flies by an aircraft

Monitoring activities

Monitoring wild fly and sterile fly populations is conducted continuously, via a network of traps which include two types of traps for catching mature flies:

  • Jackson trap for monitoring wild and sterile male flies
  • Tephri trap for monitoring wild female flies

Monitoring infected fruit - monitoring the presence of stings, eggs, and fly maggots - is executed during the period the fruit is sensitive, using sampling of suspicious fruit and their incubation in the laboratory.

Complementary control actions

When there is a suspicion of an outbreak site, it is treated using complentary control means.

Management and control system

Data collection and entry into a Geographic Information System (GIS):

  • Dispersal of sterile male flies
  • Fly trapping
  • Infested fruit
  • General data: climate, fruit phenology and fruit picking status

Data processing and information analyzing by a professional team

Making operative decisions for continued operation and implementation of the decisions.
